The Department of
Music is located on the first floor of Powell Hall
in the Silverman Fine Arts Center. The Department
facilities include computer-assisted classrooms and
a 12-position computer-keyboard lab. Piano teaching
studios are equipped with Steinway grand pianos, as
are many of the classrooms and practice rooms.
The University's primary performance space is the
Ken Bondurant Auditorium in Preston Hall, which
seats 1,500 and houses two Steinway concert grand
pianos along with a 55-rank Möller organ. The more
intimate Norwood Room in the Bondurant Center for
the Arts also houses a Steinway grand piano and
hosts additional concerts and recitals.
The new Douglas and Bea Covington Fine and
Performing Arts Center, scheduled to open during the
2008-2009 academic year, will feature a state of the
art, 350-seat Concert/Recital Hall, new rehearsal
halls, additional teaching studios and a music media
center. Photos are being posted (see below) so that
it is possible to view the building site throughout
the construction process until completion.
A Center
for Music Technology serves as the nucleus for
instruction, teacher training, sponsored research,
special seminars and concerts involving digital
technologies within the Department of Music. The
Center maintains and array of MIDI-based, computer
controlled digital synthesizers and sound processing
equipment located in four studios. Computer music
courses emphasize innovative and creative use of
technology in music composition, performance, music
education, music business and music therapy.
